FORGOTTEN EUROPE BECKONS

Sophia’s Travel Specializes in Emerging Europe

A lesser-known Europe, rich in history and tradition, awaits travelers looking for new and emerging destinations, according to Sophia Kulich, owner of Sophia’s Travel. Ukranian-born Sophia specializes in small-group travel to former Eastern bloc countries, as well as destinations with a now-forgotten Jewish heritage.

The 2018 travel roster includes discoveries of Poland, Romania, Georgia and Armenia, plus explorations of Christian and Jewish heritage in lesser-known but emerging destinations like Malta and Puglia, Italy. Personally led by Ms. Kulich, the small-group tours include 4 – and 5- star or best-available accommodations, select meals and local excursions. Each tour is a one-time departure and delves into the area’s history, including often-overlooked Jewish heritage.

Falling for Malta, October 10 – 17

Departing October 10, Sophia’s 8day/7 night tour of Malta visits sites associated withPagan, Christian, and Jewish heritage. Using the present-day capital of Valletta as a base, participants visit the island of Gozo and the Ggantija Temples, which predate Stonehenge and the Giza Pyramids by 1,000 years, as well as Birgu, the 16th century capital, in time for the annual Birgufest celebrations.

In addition to visiting sites of scenic, cultural and historic interest, tour participants will uncover Malta’s little-known Jewish history, such as the Jews Sally Port, where free Jews visiting Valletta had to enter during the reign of the Knights of St. John.  Kalkara Cemetery, Malta’s earliest surviving Jewish burial ground, dating from 1784, and Marsa Jewish Cemetery, established in 1879 are among other sites,  along with the old medieval capital of Mdina, a center of Jewish culture in the Middle Ages.

Price for the tour is $3,050 per person, double occupancy; single supplement is $1,050, based on minimum 8 persons.  Included in the price are 5-star accommodations in Valletta, local tours and transportation, 3 lunches, and 2 dinners.  Air fare to Malta is additional.
