Independent travelers and rail enthusiasts can sample pastries in France, dine on paella in Spain, and sip Port in Portugal on Eurobound’s award-winning “Pastries, Paella, and Port” rail package beginning in Toulouse and ending in Porto.
The independent package recently won first place in a Rail Europe contest for the most creative itinerary designed to inspire seeing Europe by train. Beginning in Toulouse, France and ending in Porto, Portugal, the itinerary encompasses 5 overnight stops in three countries– France, Spain, and Portugal—and includes a luxury overnight train between Madrid and Lisbon.
Beginning with an overnight stay in Toulouse, some 400 miles south of Paris, guests travel to Carcassonne and then to Perpignan, near the Mediterranean coast. From Perpignan the itinerary continues to Spain, with overnights in Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid. The overnight Trenhotel International night train, known for its luxury, connects Madrid Spain with Lisbon, Portugal, followed by a final train ride to Porto on Portugal’s Atlantic Coast.
While the package entails mostly short train trips of between 1 – 3 hours and can be done in 7 nights, Eurobound recommends a personalized itinerary with more time at each destination. In addition to train and hotel accommodations, Eurobound can arrange private tours and activities for each destination.
According to Jeff Roy, Eurobound’s Vice President Marketing & Sales, Americans are increasingly asking to experience Europe’s rail system. “However, even with a rail pass, researching timetables and reserving specific trains and multiple hotels can be time consuming and confusing. By creating a custom package including private activities tailored to each party, we alleviate the stress of planning and create one seamless vacation experience.”
